Teaching and learning measures

Our 20 month teacher-researcher project had an ambitious aim: to 'establish the features of successful learning and teaching of measurement', with a focus on the entry levels of the curriculum.

Two apparently contradictory themes emerged from our data:

  • Work on measurement is important for gaining qualifications (and qualifications are important) but people do not need measurement skills in their everyday lives.
  • What are numbers if they are not connected to something? Measurement should be at the heart of the adult Numeracy curriculum.

The teacher researchers were Mark Baxter (HMP Brixton/Reed Learning and South Thames College), Eamon Leddy ( Westminster Kingsway College and City & Islington College), Liz Richards ( Lambeth College) and Topo Wresniwiro ( HMP Belmarsh/Amersham & Wycombe College). Alison Tomlin (King's College London) was the researcher. Diana Coben ( Nottingham University and NRDC) led the project. The project was co-directed by Margaret Brown (King's College London).
